About

About Us

We are a pair of former classmates who, between us, are offering lessons in Maths, Physics, Problem Solving, French and Spanish and we are now undergraduates at two of the top 3 universities in the UK in our respective subjects. We both have a range of rewarding teaching experience including over 200 hours each of private tutoring and working with the Invicta Project (a charity giving free online Maths and English lessons to children whose education has been disrupted by the Coronavirus Pandemic) during the summer of 2020.

Our method follows the principles of learner-centred teaching and can be summarised as follows:

1. The teaching respects the learner's autonomy and self-directed learning

2. The teaching builds up on the learner's prior experience and knowledge

3. The teaching is goal-oriented and relevant to the learner's individual objectives and needs.

We have introduced ourselves below and we look forward to working with you!

Hi! My name is Angus Callan-Smith and I am an undergraduate student of French and Spanish at Trinity College, Cambridge starting in October 2020.

I am keen to share my love of languages with students of all ages and at all levels from beginner up to (I)GCSE and have had a range of teaching experience.

Since Summer 2020, I have delivered over 200 hours of online and face-to-face private tuition in French and Spanish and was a facilitator for the Invicta Project in Summer 2020.

In addition, in my role as modern languages ambassador for my school, I assisted younger years with exam preparation and specific difficulties. I also taught Spanish to a group of primary school students in a local Oxford school on a weekly basis as well as working alongside the coach at my local tennis club, becoming a Tennis Leader.

I hold 3A*s (or equivalent) at A level in French, Spanish and English and I hold ten (I)GCSEs of which nine were graded A*/9 including those in French, Spanish, Maths and Physics.

In my spare time, I enjoy discovering a range of cinema from Latin America and the French Nouvelle Vague period as well as expanding my repertoire of jazz piano.

Hi! My name is Kiarash Shaddel, I am 20 years old and I am an undergraduate student of Physics with Theoretical Physics at Imperial College, London.

I became passionate about teaching at an earlier age than most due to the teaching/academic background of my family and I developed a special interest in providing effective feedback whilst working on an academic project with my parents.

I also have a range of teaching experience in the form of:

  • delivering over 200 hours of online and face-to-face private tutoring in maths and physics since the summer of 2020.

  • between January and March 2022, I spent over 80 hours teaching in a public school in London.

  • facilitating for the Invicta Project in the summers of 2020, 2021 and 2022

  • volunteering at a local primary school where I taught maths to young children with emotional difficulties

  • coaching table tennis where I have taught children and adults over a wide range of ages.

I always follow the principles of learner-centred teaching regardless of the content of the lessons (be it maths and physics or table tennis). I have a track record of consistently receiving good feedback and have been commented as planning and executing my teaching sessions meticulously and well.

Furthermore, my past students and their teachers have remarked on their improved confidence and abilities as a result of my efforts.

Teaching Experience:

  • Since Summer 2020, I have been giving private lessons in maths and physics amounting to over 200 hours of teaching during this time. I have received consistently excellent feedback from all my students and their parents and am keen to continue improving to help my current and future students to reach their goals.

  • Between January and March 2022, I spent over 80 hours working in a London school where I volunteered as a teacher/teaching assistant. I came in once a week to teach full lessons and lesson parts to whole classes of age year 9 up to year 13. Feedback from teachers and students alike was very positive and commented saying the lessons were enjoyable and well-prepared. The teachers reported a noticeable increase in the overall engagement and performance of the students. I also delivered a project aimed at boosting student engagement in STEM which in part involved delivering a number of enrichment lectures.

  • Since August 2020, I have worked with the Invicta Project as a facilitator. My role was to assist the teacher in any way I could to help the lesson run smoothly. This included giving supportive feedback to the students, keeping an eye on student behaviour and being ready to keep the lesson going if the teacher experienced any technological difficulties.

  • Using my UK Level 1 Accredited Coaching degree, I have coached children and adults of different ages multiple times over the last 3 years including at my school and at the club I set up, managed and coached at in my local community centre between 2017-19.

  • During the academic year of 2018-19, I volunteered at a local primary school where my job was to teach maths to two 8 year old boys. Both boys had emotional problems and one in particular was extremely withdrawn. As a result of my efforts, both of them went from being very insecure to being much more self-assured and my input was acknowledged and praised by their teachers.

These experiences have helped me develop my teaching and communication skills but also my ability to think on my feet and knowing how and when to ask for help for the benefit of the student.

Personal Attributes:

I have been commented as being responsible, dependable, hardworking and organised as well as having good written and verbal communication skills.

I have an up-to-date enhanced DBS check clearing me for working with children and coaching sport.
